Barry Scharf - Fine Artist

Redmond, WA - United States

At 18, Barry enlisted in the Air Force at the height of the Vietnam War and was stationed at many bases throughout Europe. It was at this time that his interest in art became profound. While based it Italy, he visited Venice and other cities. He was overwhelmed by the wonderful paintings, architecture and sculpture of the renaissance, which set the stage for what he would do with his life. In 1968, he was honorably discharged and began his studies at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina, where he met his mentor and lifelong friend Edward Reep a WWII Artist and Guggenheim Fellow famous for his battlefield watercolors and oil paintings. Barry studied with Reep until his graduation in 1973, receiving his BFA degree. He then attended Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, California where he was awarded a Scholarship. At Otis he won the prestigious Hancock Park Art award for excellence in painting. Barry graduated with a Masters of Fine Arts in 1975 marking the beginning of his professional art career.
